A Mix of Recommended Books (Images)

This post consists of some books I've used to study patristics, empiricist theories of mind, and the LXX:

I've been recenty looking for affordable greek editions of certain texts ... I would be elated if someone put out an edition of Contra Celsum under $100. (I know they are all available online and in PDF, but I'm a paper book guy).

What about Selwyn's Greek text for books 1-4 of Contra Celsum? Amazon has it for $37.

I've seen that one ... but it seems strange to have an edition that excludes half the books, even the most important parts (in contra Celsum things get really interesting in the last two books.

When I was researching Origen years ago, I just used an English edition of Contra Celsum, so I know what you mean about the last books. I'm not sure why Selwyn did a partial Greek text, but it's not uncommon in classics to find this kind of thing. For example, I have a Greek text of the Odyssey that is just 1 book of the work, and I have a Thucydides text with only some of the books in Greek. I can't speak for Selwyn though.

I have his greek text in PDF, I use english translations for languages I can't read (Latin for example), but if it's in Greek I like having a Greek text, especially for Origen who is pretty neuanced in his language.

I understand what you're saying: I once preferred paper/hardback for reading these texts but now I love digital although I still have some paper texts. Brill has a crazy expensive critical edition of Contra Celson, book VIII. You can get it for around $300-400.00.

Thanks to Wiki, I found this text: https://archive.org/details/origeneswerke00origgoog/page/n7/mode/2up?view=theater

Maybe you could obtain this work in hardback/paperback. Additionally, there is Migne, but that's usually not affordable. I found the digital copy with the Greek text of Contra Celsum.

Thanks :), I have a lot in digital form, but I'm old school. wipf & stock has a lot of reprints of old editions. I got a tip to perhpas just print out my own PDF of the greek text, I might do that.

That is an option too 😀

I did find you some Migne volumes that are reasonable. You would only need the one with Contra Celsum or any other work you wanted to read. See https://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?bsi=120&n=100121503&sortby=17&tn=Patrologiae+cursus+completus+...&prevpage=2
